The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IB learners are:

THS encourages ALL students who wish to take the IB Diploma do so.  We do not exclude students based on their previous academic achievements. 

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) at Tavares High School is an open enrollment programme. Students may enroll in the full IB DP, or they may take individual IB courses in areas of interest and ability. The IB DP is not a competitive placement programme. There is no set limit to the number of students who may participate in IB courses or the Diploma Programme. Students who attend non-IB schools in other Lake County Schools (LCS) attendance zones may request a school of choice waiver to THS to take part in the full IB Diploma Programme.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses offer similar educational benefits but in different ways.

High school students looking to challenge themselves academically and earn college credits early sometimes take Advanced Placement courses. Likewise, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is another way some get a head start on postsecondary education.

“Both groups of students are really looking to challenge themselves with college-level material to potentially earn college credits,” says Stuart Jones, the IB diploma program coordinator at Midlothian High School in Virginia, which offers both AP and IB courses.
